Kingsbarns Golf Links
Kyle Phillips's 2000 links near St Andrews — 1.8 miles of North Sea coastline, host of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and consistently ranked among the top courses in the British Isles.
Course overview
Kingsbarns Golf Links opened in 2000 on a 220-acre site within the historic Cambo Estate south of St Andrews, reviving golf on land last used for the game in the 1850s. Designer Kyle Phillips created 1.8 miles of North Sea shoreline frontage across the 18 holes, integrating the natural coastal topography so convincingly that the course appears far older than it is. Since opening, it has consistently ranked among the top courses in the British Isles and features annually in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship alongside St Andrews Old Course and Carnoustie. Kingsbarns operates without a traditional membership, making it fully accessible to visiting golfers throughout the season.

Character & atmosphere
Kingsbarns blends the strategic variety of true links golf — firm fairways, pot bunkers, sea breezes from multiple directions — with unusually dramatic coastal theatre. The closing holes from the 12th onward hug the North Sea shoreline and demand accurate shot selection under the psychological weight of the surrounding scenery.

How to get there
Edinburgh Airport is the main gateway; the drive to Kingsbarns via the Forth Road Bridge, M90, and A917 coast road takes around 90 minutes. Car hire is the best option for exploring the East Neuk coastline.
Where to stay
St Andrews town is the self-contained home of golf, and for most visitors it is the only base they need. Being in the town means the Old Course is a short walk away and the atmosphere — historic, unhurried, genuinely golf-obsessed — is part of the experience.
