Gray Bear Golf Course at Tále was the first 18-hole championship course in Slovakia (2002) and remains its most distinctive layout in terms of setting. Designed by Bob Walton and Skip Malek, it occupies a mountain valley in the Low Tatras National Park with peaks visible throughout the round. The Tále resort complex runs as both a ski and golf destination, giving it well-developed infrastructure and hotel accommodation. The surrounding region — the UNESCO-listed wooden churches of Hronsek, Banská Bystrica's historic mining town, the Demänovská ice cave system, and the Horehronie valley — provides exceptional context for a golf trip that extends beyond the course.

Best time to visit: May to October for golf. The course typically opens after the ski season ends in spring. June to September offers the most settled mountain weather and the longest daylight.

Tále / Brezno

Staying at the Tále resort is the most immersive option for the Gray Bear Golf Course — the Low Tatras mountain environment is the course's defining feature, and waking up surrounded by that landscape is part of the experience. Brezno is a short drive for a more independent town stay; the Horehronie valley has a quiet, authentic character that makes it a distinctive alternative to Slovakia's busier tourist regions.

Golf access: Gray Bear Golf Course is at Tále, within the resort complex — on-site accommodation is the most practical for golfers.
Restaurants & evenings: The Tále resort has on-site dining; Brezno, the nearest town (~12 km), has traditional Slovak restaurants and cafés in a relaxed small-town setting.
Families: The Low Tatras National Park offers exceptional summer hiking; the Demänovská ice cave and Demänovská freedom cave (among Slovakia's most visited natural sites) are within 30 km; the Tále area itself is a year-round resort with winter ski facilities.

Banská Bystrica

Banská Bystrica is the regional capital of central Slovakia and the best city base for a Low Tatras golf trip — larger than Brezno, with a full range of accommodation and restaurants, and within a comfortable 40-minute drive of Gray Bear. The town's historic centre, built on wealth from mediaeval silver and copper mining, has a distinctive character rare among Slovak cities, with an intact Renaissance arcade around the main square and a strong civic museum culture.

Golf access: Gray Bear Golf Course is approximately 40 km north of Banská Bystrica — around 35–40 minutes by car through the Horehronie valley.
Restaurants & evenings: Banská Bystrica has the widest selection of restaurants in the region and a compact, walkable historic centre with good Slovak cuisine and café options.
Families: The SNP (Slovak National Uprising) Museum in Banská Bystrica is one of Slovakia's most significant cultural sites; the city's central Námestie SNP square, the Matej bell tower, and access to the Donovaly ski area and Low Tatras hiking routes make it a varied base.
