Course overview
Designed by Cabell B. Robinson and inaugurated on 14 June 1997, Praia D'el Rey alternates between holes among Atlantic dunes and holes through fragrant pine forest, roughly an hour north of Lisbon. The front nine plays through the pines; the back nine unfolds along the coast where ocean winds become a significant factor. Hole 17 — a par-5 of 570 metres, one of the longest in Portugal — and the closing 18th, a par-5 of 490 metres with a panoramic view of the back nine and the Atlantic, make for a demanding and memorable finish. A maximum handicap of 36 is accepted.

A par-5 of 570 metres — one of the longest holes in Portugal — played into the prevailing Atlantic wind. Length and the exposure to the elements make this the most physically and strategically demanding hole on the course.

How to get there
Lisbon Airport is the most practical gateway. The drive north to Praia d'El Rey via the A8 motorway takes around 70 minutes. Car hire gives the best access to the Silver Coast.
Where to stay
The Óbidos area on Portugal's Silver Coast combines dune-and-pine links golf at Praia D'el Rey with one of the country's most photogenic medieval towns. The coast here is less developed than the Algarve, which suits golfers looking for something quieter and more authentically Portuguese.
