Designed by Arthur Hills and opened in 2001, Oitavos Dunes occupies a dramatic site within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, 30 kilometres west of Lisbon. The layout routes through umbrella pine forest and expansive Atlantic dunes, with the ocean visible from most holes. From the championship tees the course measures 6,372 metres and carries a course rating of 74.1 (slope 128). The natural topography has been preserved throughout: the dunescape, the flora of the protected park, and the prevailing Atlantic winds combine to create a test that is both visually spectacular and strategically demanding. The course has been ranked number one in Portugal and is a consistent presence on lists of Europe's best courses.

How to get there
Lisbon Airport is around 45 minutes from Cascais. Car hire or a taxi are the simplest options; the A5 motorway connects Lisbon directly to Cascais. The Sintra–Cascais train from Cais do Sodré is also practical if arriving without a car.
Where to stay
The Óbidos area on Portugal's Silver Coast combines dune-and-pine links golf at Praia D'el Rey with one of the country's most photogenic medieval towns. The coast here is less developed than the Algarve, which suits golfers looking for something quieter and more authentically Portuguese.
