Where to stay
Troon
Troon is the natural base for the Ayrshire links circuit, with Royal Troon effectively in the town centre and several other top courses within a short drive. The seaside setting is pleasant, and the town has enough dining and a good beach to occupy evenings and rest days.
- Golf access
- Royal Troon is directly in the town; Prestwick, Western Gailes, and Dundonald are all within 15 minutes.
- Restaurants & evenings
- A seaside resort town with a good number of restaurants and pubs; Marine Hotel is a long-standing dining landmark.
- Families
- Troon's South Beach is one of Ayrshire's finest; Vikingar! visitor attraction in nearby Largs and Culzean Castle south of Ayr are popular with families.
Ayr
Ayr is the largest town on the Ayrshire coast and offers a slightly broader range of accommodation and dining than the smaller resort towns. Its position is central for both the northern links around Troon and Prestwick and the southern course at Turnberry.
- Golf access
- Close to Prestwick, Troon, and Turnberry; a practical central hub for the full Ayrshire coast.
- Restaurants & evenings
- A sizeable town with a broad range of restaurants, pubs, and bars — more variety than Troon.
- Families
- Burns Country connections (Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway), Ayr Racecourse, and the beach promenade suit families well.
Glasgow
Glasgow is the city base for golfers who want to combine Ayrshire links golf with one of Britain's most exciting urban destinations. The drive to the courses is longer than staying on the Ayrshire coast, but Glasgow's restaurant and cultural scene is a genuine compensation.
- Golf access
- Around 50 minutes from the Ayrshire courses; closer to East Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire parkland courses. Prestwick Airport is equidistant.
- Restaurants & evenings
- One of Britain's best dining cities, with a world-class range of restaurants, bars, and independent food spots.
- Families
- The Burrell Collection, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, and the Riverside Museum make Glasgow one of the UK's best city destinations for families.
