Course overview
Royal Porthcawl Golf Club was founded in 1891 by a group of Cardiff businessmen, with the club moving to its present site at Rest Bay in 1895. Charles Gibson laid out the first nine holes in 1892, extended to eighteen by Ramsay Hunter in 1897; Harry Colt reworked several holes in 1913, and J.H. Taylor and F.W. Hawtree altered several greens in 1925. Granted Royal status in 1909, the club has hosted The Amateur Championship, the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup, and three editions of The Senior Open Championship, and is recognised as the leading golf club in Wales.

Cardiff Airport (CWL) is the closest airport to Royal Porthcawl, approximately 21 miles away — around 34 minutes by car. Bristol Airport (BRS), across the Bristol Channel in England, is a further alternative with more international routes, though the drive is considerably longer at over an hour. Car hire is recommended from either airport, as the course sits on the edge of town with limited direct public transport.
